The best is to to download and install a client (program) on your own computer, e.g. from Tucows. For my own part I'm quite partial to BitchX, which also runs perfectly on freeBSD og Linux.

It's pretty easy:

  1. Install the program, e.g. mIRC
  2. Fill in the necessary information
  3. Connect to a DALnet server

  4. Type "/nick your-nick" (without "") if you need to change nick
  5. Type "/msg nickserv register your-password" (without "") if you need to register your nick for the first time (so that no one can steal it).
  6. Type "/msg nickserv identify your-password" if you need to identify for you nick

  7. Type "/join #satanmuse" (without "")
  8. That's it.

If you're using BitchX, you might benefit from putting something like this, in your .ircrc

# FORMAT SETTINGS

# Make nick auto completion nice so it doesn't use CTRL codes (bold e.g.)
fset NICK_AUTO $0:$1-
fset NICK_COMP $0:$1-

# Aliases and stuff
alias satnick /msg nickserv@services.dal.net identify $0
alias satop /msg chanserv@services.dal.net op #satanmuse HrVad
alias satmemo /msg memoserv@services.dal.net $0 $1
alias kbot /k $0 Bye bot

SET TIMESTAMP ON
SET CLOCK_24HOUR ON
SET TIMESTAMP_STRING [%H:%M]
set auto_away off

But you can put anything you want in there. A couple of other tips:
